What Can I Do About Dental Stains?
Suffering from yellowing teeth? Don’t worry! Our Slidell dentists have the solution.
If you have stains, you aren’t alone. Whether it’s just the effects of the natural aging process or you are an avid coffee drinker, stains can happen to anyone. Of course, your Slidell dentists Dr. Susan Silvestri and Dr. Ronnie Deniger have the cosmetic treatment for you, depending on the type and severity of your stains.
Types of Dental Stains
There are two kinds of stains that can befall your teeth:
External/Extrinsic: This refers to stains that occur on the outer layers of the tooth’s enamel. Foods and drinks such as coffee, wine, berries, tomato sauce and dark sodas often cause these kinds of stains. Aging and smoking are other factors that can contribute to external staining.
Internal/Intrinsic: These stains affect the inner structures of the tooth, causing the tooth to darken. These stains can be brought about by:
- Injury or trauma
- Long-term antibiotic use
- Excessive fluoride treatment
Cosmetic Dentistry Options
Internal and external stains are often treated a bit differently by our Slidell, LA general dentist. External stains, as you may already imagine, are easier to remove. Because internal stains affect the inner structures it’s harder to remove these discolorations.
The two common treatment options for handling stains are teeth whitening and dental veneers.
Teeth Whitening
This is usually the best option for those dealing with external stains, and some patients may even notice that their teeth turn several shades whiter with just one in-office whitening treatment. The process takes less than one hour and can give you a brighter smile fast.
Our in-office whitening system is the safest and fastest way to remove surface stains. Of course, you can also ask us about our at-home whitening system, which won’t give you results as quickly but may be easier on your budget.
Dental Veneers
These thin porcelain shells are affixed to the front of your teeth to hide a myriad of imperfections. Veneers can be an ideal cosmetic option for someone who wants a whiter smile, but who is dealing with internal discolorations that don’t respond to whitening. While a bit more invasive than teeth whitening, this procedure can usually be performed in just a couple visits without the use of anesthesia or needles. What you’ll be left with is a straighter, whiter and more attractive smile for life.
