The Importance of Dental Crowns
Find out why our dentist may recommend that you get a dental crown.
A dental crown can be used in many different ways. Perhaps you know someone who has a dental crown, or maybe our Slidell, LA, dentists, Dr. Susan Silverstri and Dr. Ronnie Deniger, has recently told you that a crown could benefit your smile. Knowing everything you can about a dental treatment before you get it is fantastic and can help make the visit so much easier. Here’s all you need to know about getting a dental crown.
Why is a crown used?
There are many reasons a crown can be a great restoration for your smile. Perhaps you have a tooth that has been damaged or weakened, either by a fracture, decay or infection. If our Slidell general dentist has told you that you need root canal therapy, a dental crown will most likely be placed over the tooth to preserve what’s left of the tooth.
Of course, crowns aren’t always designed to restore function and strength back into a tooth. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons. Maybe you hate that you have an oddly shaped or discolored tooth. It might be the only thing keeping you from having a beautiful smile. In this case, a dental crown may just be the best way to bolster the tooth’s appearance.
Crowns can also be placed over healthy teeth to support a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a great way to replace one or more missing teeth in a row with a fixed restoration. If you choose to get a dental implant to replace a missing tooth, a crown will also have to be attached or cemented over the implant to complete the restoration.
Without a crown what would happen?
If you have a damaged tooth there is a pretty good possibility that over time the tooth will weaken and get worse. This could lead to a crack that is so severe that the tooth is beyond repair and will need to be removed. A crown is one of the most commonly used restorations for protecting a tooth and providing a strong outer layer so that you can continue to use your teeth with confidence.
Silvestri & Deniger Dentistry in Slidell, LA, prides itself on providing a full range of cosmetic, preventive and restorative dental services at your disposal. Whether you have questions about getting a dental crown or you want to talk to us about other restorative options, we are here for you.
