fillingAlthough most of us think of pain as the primary symptom of a cavity, tooth decay can also cause a few other distressing symptoms. Paying attention to these signs can help you limit the damage to your tooth, especially given that pain doesn't always manifest itself until the condition evolves into its more serious stages. Read on to learn more, and contact Drs. Susan Silvestri and Ronnie Deniger, your Slidell, LA, dentists, if you think that you may need treatment!

Tooth decay signs

In most cases, cavities don't cause pain unless there is a large presence of decay, so if you experiencing pain, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with your Slidell dentist. Delaying treatment may allow the decay to spread to other teeth or infect your tooth pulp, a scenario in which you will need root canal therapy.

Other signs of a cavity include:

  • Spots on Your Tooth: Brown or black spots on a tooth is an obvious sign of tooth decay. You may also occasionally see white spots on a tooth. These spots occur when cavity-causing plaque builds up on your teeth. Brushing and flossing will remove the plaque and prevent the cavity from forming.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: Eating can be a painful experience if you have a cavity. Decay can make your teeth sensitive to hot, cold, or sugary foods/beverages. You may also notice a little pain when you chew or even press on your tooth. Sensitivity can additionally occur if you have receding gums or gum disease, two conditions that also warrant a trip to the dental office.
  • Holes in Teeth: Although tooth decay often remains hidden under your tooth enamel, holes can occur if your cavity isn't filled. Holes, even if they're tiny, are never a good sign and shouldn't be ignored.
